Winter Home Staging Tips You Won’t Want to Miss!

December 1, 2014

If you are planning on selling your home, it can be difficult to make it look beautiful when it is miserable outside. However, don’t let this put you off. You can still make your home look incredible, both inside and out. Read on to discover some not-to-be-missed winter home staging tips that really work.

  • Warm it up – There is only one place to begin, and this is by making your home warm and cosy. There is nothing worse for a potential buyer than walking into a property and it feeling cold and uncomfortable. They won’t be able to envision living there. So, how do you make your home warm and appealing? If you have a fireplace, there’s nothing better than a crackling fire throughout the winter months. If you don’t have a fireplace, there are plenty of other options. Play around with textures to create a soft and plush feel. Throws and excessive cushions work really well. You should also enhance the ambience with scented candles that are placed around the home tastefully. Rich scents like vanilla and cinnamon are ideal, as they fill the air without being overpowering.
  • Change your garage door – You may not be able to have a garden that is bursting with vibrant colours during the winter months. However, this does not mean that the exterior of your home can’t be striking and inviting. One change that you can make is buying a new garage door. From roller doors to sectional doors, there are many different styles of garage doors that are available. If you can afford to spend some money on a designer garage door, it may be worth it if your garage is at the forefront of your property and, therefore, the first thing that potential buyers will see.
  • Create a mood – When it comes to home staging, it is often beneficial to create a mood. By doing this, you get the buyer to feel a certain way, and they will imagine that this is what they are going to get every day of their lives if they buy the home. For example, you could create a relaxing mood, or a romantic one. We often see this when people give their bathroom a spa feel. You can do this by grouping shampoo, lotions, and soaps, rolling up washcloths and tying them with a ribbon and placing them inside a basket, and hanging plush robes. After all, there is nothing better than stepping outside of the shower and putting on a big, comfortable robe during the colder months is there? Other options for around the home include dressing your dining room table for a dinner for two or placing vases filled with winter flowers around your property.
  • Let there be light – Light makes a massive difference when it comes to the appearance and atmosphere of your home. The more natural light you can let into the room, the better. It will open up the room, making it appear bigger and more welcoming. Therefore, make sure you open the shutters, pull up the blinds, and push back the drapes on every window. You should also make sure you have a number of light sources in each room. Relying on one harsh overhead is no good. Not only does this fail to light the room effectively, but it can give you a headache too! Instead, it’s good to have, for example, a pendant in your living room, with a standing light in one corner, and reading lights strategically placed around the room. Whenever someone comes to view your house, you should turn on every light in the house, including closet lights and appliance lights. If you have some rooms that don’t have many windows, place spotlights on the floor being furniture. Make sure you turn off computers, speakers, and televisions.
  • Clear a path – This one is especially important during the winter months! You need to ensure that you continue to shovel a pathway through the snow, especially if snow is still falling. If it is raining, it is a good idea to place a container by the front door so that people can place their shoes and umbrella inside. You should also put a rubber mat by the front door too. It’s also important to open a path from the street to the sidewalk too; otherwise your visitors are going to be forced to crawl over snowdrifts. Make sure you scrape the walkways regularly, as footprints on freshly fallen snow easily turn into ice. Aside from this, the last thing you want is for your guests to slip on the ice or snow, which is why sprinkling a layer of sand from your front door to where the viewers are likely to park is advised.
  • Embrace the season – Of course, winter poses some unique challenges. Nonetheless, it has an allure all of its own, and so it is a good idea to take advantage of this. Place festive accents and catch the seasonal spirit throughout your property. There are many ways you can do this, from festive ornaments to Christmas trees. After all, there is no denying how magical the festive feeling can be. It puts everyone in a positive mood. Nonetheless, it is worth pointing out how important it is to get the balance right. Don’t overdo it. You don’t want your house to look like Santa’s grotto. Your choices need to be tasteful, and they shouldn’t take away from the features of your home. Such additions like this need to enhance the property, rather than distract from it.

So there you have it: some top winter home staging tips that will make your property more appealing and more inviting over the colder months. There is no denying that property staging can be a little bit more difficult during the winter. However, if you follow the suggestions that have been mentioned above, you are bound to make a great impression and increase your chances of making that desired home sale.
