Weekly Meal Plan: MORE Cheap Meals Ideas for a Family of 4

We’ve all been in a pinch at times and have needed to reduce our outgoings. When feeding a family that can feel impossible, or it can be hard to seek inspiration and variety, but luckily this list was shared by a woman in the Facebook group Feeding Your Family for £1 a Day and I wanted to share it here for anyone that may need it or may want some inspiration.

These cheap family meals are perfect if you are trying to cook on a budget and don’t want to scrimp on flavour or comfort. It really is easy to cook on a budget with these simple family recipes for under £1 per head. 

*At the time of publishing this blog post, the foods listed below total £18.42 but prices often vary and may be cheaper in different supermarkets.

Meal 1 – Sunday Roast
Medium Chicken Aldi £2.19
2 kg potatoes Aldi £0.80
Broccoli Aldi £0.43
Carrots Aldi £0.43
Green Beans Aldi £0.43
Stuffing Aldi £0.32
Gravy Aldi £0.30
(freeze any leftover chicken for Tuesday) £4.90

Meal 2 – Meatless Monday Chickpea Curry
1 tsp dried garlic Aldi £0.05
Store cupboard staples approx 85p each
1 tsp garam masala Aldi £0.05
1 tsp turmeric Aldi £0.05
1 tsp ground coriander Aldi £0.05
1 tbsp oil £0.10
400g can plum tomatoes Asda £0.25 Currently 4 for £1.00
400ml can coconut milk Aldi £0.59
2 onions sliced Aldi £0.15
200g Frozen Vegetable Medley Aldi £0.17
400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed Asda £0.25 Currently 4 for £1.00
500g Asda SP Rice Asda £0.23

Could also add leftover chicken, potatoes
1. Pour a 400g can of chopped tomatoes into a large saucepan. 2. Add 1 tsp dried garlic, 1 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp turmeric and 1 tsp ground coriander, then stir to combine. and simmer for 5mins 3. Pour in a 400ml can of coconut milk and season. Bring to the boil and simmer for a further 10 mins or until the sauce has thickened.

4. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large pan and add 2 sliced onions. Cook until softened, about 10 mins.

5. Tip in a drained and rinsed 400g can of chickpeas

6. Drain part boil mixed vegetables and add

7. Simmer for 10-15 mins and serve with boiled rice.

Meal 3 – Stew
Root Veg Medley Aldi £0.59

2 onions sliced Aldi £0.15
3 stock cubes Aldi 0.09
100g Pearl Barley Asda 0.11
100g Red Lentils Aldi 0.16
Leftover Chicken from Sunday N/A £0.00
Crusty Bread Asda £1.00

Meal 4 – Spaghetti Bolognaise
500g 20% Minced Beef finely chopped Aldi £1.59
100g Red Lentils Aldi £0.16
2 Finely chopped onions Aldi £0.15
Halve this mixture to use for another meal later in week £1.90
Half of Mince mixture £0.95
400g Tin chopped tomatoes Asda £0.25
200g sliced mushrooms Aldi £0.50
200g finely chopped or grated carrot Aldi £0.15
3 tbs Tomato Puree Asda £0.15
1 Beef stock cube Aldi £0.03
2 tsp dried garlic Aldi £0.10
1 tsp dried basil Aldi £0.05
1 tsp dried oregano Aldi £0.05
500g dry spaghetti Aldi £0.20

Meal 5 – Toad in the Hole
10 Sausages Aldi £0.50
Batter Mix Asda £0.32
1 Egg Aldi £0.08
1.5 kg Potatoes Aldi £0.60
Onion Gravy Aldi £0.30

Meal 6 Fishcakes & Chips
10 Fishcakes Iceland £1.00
Chips Aldi £1.00
500g Peas Aldi £0.50

Meal 7 – Cottage Pie
Half of the mince mixture made earlier in week £0.95
200g Small cubed carrots (boil) Aldi £0.12
Shepherds Pie Mix Aldi £0.25
1 kg Potatoes Aldi £0.40
500g Frozen Vegetable Medley Aldi £0.43

1. Defrost mince
2. Add carrots
3. Add onion water, shepherds pie mix & gravy granules to thicken
4. Pour mixture into dish and put in fridge – allow to go completely cold prevents mash sinking
5. When mince is cold boil potatoes mash and adding butter & cheese
6. Put on top of mince & cook for approx 25 mins or until mash is brown
7. Serve with mixed veg
