Top Tips To Keep Your Kitchen Stylish & Family-Friendly

December 10, 2014

The best way to get to anyone is through their stomach, so it’s no wonder that a kitchen is an important part of any family home. This is why it’s only fair for you to put as much care and attention into the look and feel of your kitchen as you do to any other room in the house, including your living room and bedrooms. Often people feel that style has to go out of the window when children come along, especially with things like your kitchen, which you have to keep as practical as possible. However, this simply isn’t true. It is possible to stay stylish as a mum, and so it’s also possible to keep your kitchen stylish too. Here’s how:

Go Open Plan

The only room in the home that your kitchen may come second best to is your living room, so why not combine the two and have an open plan room? This way you can keep an eye on your children while they occupy themselves with the television or their toys, while you’re cooking up a storm. As long as you add the right furnishings, decor, and furnishings, and position them right, your room will look like a family room, rather than look like you’ve just knocked the wall down between two separate rooms.

Keep It Country

Country kitchens can be elaborate or more simplistic, but however they’re styled, they always look incredibly chic and stylish. There are plenty of wood incorporated into country style kitchens, within flooring, cabinets, doors, and tables. Luckily, wood is a very family-friendly material, as it can easily be cleaned, and can be sanded down and re-glossed if it gets damaged.  Wooden tables and chairs are particularly great for families, as they look great, and aren’t as dangerous as glass tables are for small children. If you’re a close family, you may want to opt for benches instead of separate chairs for each family member.

Get A Splash Protector

A kitchen can be an incredibly dangerous place for children, especially small ones, who don’t understand the dangers. Your hobs are one of the biggest dangers, as your child could easily be splashed by hot liquid, or could pull a pan off the hob onto themselves. Splash protectors eliminate this danger, while also helping to keep your kitchen clean. The glass ones look modern and sophisticated too, so there’s no reason not to invest in one.

Block Your Knives

Another massive danger in your kitchen is dangerous utensils like knives. Some people like to keep these in their drawers and install a childproof catch to keep little ones out. However, if you have a particularly intelligent child, this may not stop them, and your little one could hurt themselves. It makes much more sense to invest in a heavy and sturdy knife block, which you can put at the back of the counter, where your child won’t be able to reach, and won’t be able to life, even if they could.

Add A Desk

While your child may like to do their homework in the kitchen with you, while you cook the evening meal, this isn’t really practical once you’ve laid the table, or keep your table set up for meals all day. Because of this, it makes a lot of sense to add a small desk in the kitchen instead. This can then be used by anyone in the household. For example, your partner can sit and do some work in the kitchen while chatting with you, or you can get along with some things on your laptop while they cook. It’s just another way of bringing the family together a little more.

Raise Your Cabinets

When you have children, especially if you have pets too, one of the most important factors you should consider before buying anything is how easy it’s going to be to clean. Luckily, raised cabinets are a lot easier to clean than regular ones. They also look great and help to make your kitchen feel a little less cramped.

Install A Blackboard

Organization and communication are the characteristics of any great family. Unfortunately, when you have children, you are often too busy to get organized, and the second you go to say something, you get distracted by one thing or another. Although it may seem too simple, a blackboard in your kitchen can really help with this. You can write down a to-do list for the day so that you know what you need to get done. You can also write down when you run out of anything, so that you remember to pick some up next time you go out. It can also be utilized to write little messages to your significant other and put a smile on their face. You can either buy a blackboard to put on the wall, or you could use blackboard paint to create one on a wall, or the back of a cabinet.

Get A Television

Some people absolutely hate the thought of having a TV in the kitchen, and see it as “technology taking over”. However, there are benefits for you and your family if you install one in your kitchen. You will be able to watch your show while cooking, cleaning, or ironing, so that you don’t have to watch it on on-demand, or just miss it altogether. Your children will be able to watch television in the kitchen with you, so that they can spend some extra time with you, regardless of the fact that they’ll be glued to the screen. As a family, you’ll be able to watch TV while you’re eating your evening meal, so that you don’t miss a particularly good show, and aren’t tempted to sit in the living room to eat so that you can watch it.

It can be hard to find a balance between practical and stylish when it comes to your kitchen, especially if you have children, but hopefully, these tips will help you out.
