If you interviewed a group of mums, you’d probably find that most of them admit to paying less attention to how they look after becoming a parent. When you have a little person to look after, other things go out of the window, and you realise that it doesn’t really matter if your hair is a mess or you’ve spent the whole day in joggers and a t-shirt. Although it can be refreshing to take the pressure off and not pay too much attention to your image, this doesn’t mean that you have to lose interest in fashion or stop celebrating your individual style. It can be difficult to find time to glam up, especially with a new baby, but there are ways of breaking out of a style rut and ensuring you look and feel fantastic. If you’re keen to embrace a new look or you’re looking for simple, quick ways to go from drab to fab, here are some ideas you may find useful.

Hot hair

Has it been a while since you took a trip to the salon? Have you had the same hairstyle for as long as you can remember? Do you usually spend all your time rocking a ponytail or a messy bun? If your hair is crying out for change, why not take the plunge and book an appointment with your stylist? You could try out a new cut or colour or add length and volume with some tape in hair extensions. Perhaps you fancy some highlights, or you’ve always wondered what you’d look like with a bob. Have a chat with your stylist, look at some pictures for inspiration and ask for advice about styles and shades that will suit your face shape and complement your complexion. Great hair can make any outfit, and it can also make you feel much more confident.

Creating a new capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is an excellent idea for busy mums. With this concept, you can create a whole range of looks using a few staple items. The idea is to invest in some seasonal must-haves and mix and match items to ensure you have an outfit ready for any occasion. If you get it right, this will save your hours of trying everything on and worrying about having nothing to wear. In winter, you need to think about comfort and style. Consider buying items such as slim-fit black jeans, a cord skirt and some cigarette pants and then add a crisp white blouse, some cosy throw-on cardigans and basic roll-neck jumpers. Add a blazer and a classic LBD and then invest in a statement camel or tweed coat to complete the collection. You can then use accessories to dress your pieces up and down and give each look a unique spin.

Simple but effective makeup

Do you struggle to find time to put makeup on? If so, there are some fabulous looks you can achieve in just a few minutes. The first thing to do is find a foundation that suits your skin type and matches your skin tone. It’s worth visiting beauty counters to get the perfect match, as ordering online can be a minefield. Once you’ve got your base, all you need is a slick of mascara, a touch of bronze or blush to give your cheeks colour and a nude gloss to enhance your lips. If you’re going out for the night, add eyeshadow and liner or go for a bold lip.

If you’re stuck in a style rut, don’t panic! Help is at hand!
