Summer is a little mixed in the UK right now with some areas in blistering heats whilst some areas are in the rain, however, we have all felt the sun at some point and boy has it been a LOT. (Are you even British if you don’t call for sun all year and then moan the second it gets here?)
Anyways – I bet during this time you are dishing out ice lollies in abundance? (and having a few yourself of course).
I wanted to share this super cool “hack” to help make healthier choices during the summer. During the hot weather its even more important to keep on top of your hydration, vitamins and nutrients and these Iced Fruit Kebabs are a great way to do so whiles keeping things fun. Also, HIGHLY recommend if you are pregnant and have an ice lolly food craving!
They’re super easy to make, obviously I am sure you can work it out for yourself but here are the instructions with some tips based off experience.
Pick up some lollipop sticks from the craft section of your local supermarket and also some wooden skewers and pick up a good selection of fruit. I have listed below some suggestions as well as their superpower (what makes them so good for you!)
Get skewering. The watermelon slices I just make a little slit with a knife and popped in a lollipop stick. The bananas were easy and the fruit kebabs too.
Embellish. This is totally optional but makes everything a little more fun, right? For the bananas, I just melted some chocolate in the microwave and drizzled. Some of them I added sprinkes. The bananas in chocolate were honestly so delicious. The watermelon I also added sprinkles which just stuck to the juice.
Wrap them individually in tin foil as they stick together once frozen.
Leave them overnight. So it doesn’t really matter how long you leave them in the freezer for because they’re obviously edible straight away but I for the best “ice lolly” results to leave them overnight.
Fruit Suggestions & their Superpowers!
Watermelon: This one tasted amazing. SO MUCH BETTER than the ice lolly alternatives. Watermelon is 92% water so this fruit is perfect for keeping any water dodgers hydrated during the heat! Its also really low in calories if you are looking for a low-cal alternative to sugary ice lollies. Its also a good source of Vitamin C.
Mango: Mango is an absolute powerhouse of Vitamins and equates to 67% of your recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C. Its also really high in antioxidants as well as being a good all-rounder. Mangos health benefits are going to give your whole body a little zing.
Kiwi: Kiwis are small but mighty – they really help to aid your digestion as well as lowering your blood pressure. I don’t know about you guys but the #MumLife means my blood pressure needs a little management.
Pineapple: Pineapples seem to fall under the radar for their nutritional value. One cup of pineapple exceeds your RDI of Vitamin C by 20% – as well as that they contain disease-fighting antioxidants, ease digestion and can reduce the risk of cancer.
Blueberries: Blueberries are believed to be king of the antioxidant. Antioxidants protect your body from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage your cells and contribute to ageing and diseases, such as cancer. I personally love giving them to my ever-developing toddlers because they really support brain function.
Strawberries: Strawberries are said to be one of the best berries for its anticancer properties as well as being amazing for the heart!
Bananas: Bananas are so good for you. They are literally an “all prong attack”, you name it, they are good for it. The health benefits are vast so just give them a quick Google yourself. My favourite thing about bananas is that they’re one of the most affordable fruits!
