An Open Letter to my Son on #InternationalWomansDay

March 8, 2017

You are being raised by incredible women AND men. I want you to be just like your daddy, a man that is a great father and the best at ironing your sleepsuits. A man who only sees men and women as different because of their reproductive organs and if he could have carried and birthed you – he would have!

Dear Rory

I hope when you are old enough to realise what is going on, there won’t be a need for men or women to have a selected day of celebration. I hope that the world would have caught up with the ideal of equality and we can just celebrate the human race.

You’re lucky, in the UK we have pretty much cracked equality with a few discrepancies over paternity leave/pay and a few queries over salaries. When it comes to equals we are in a much better place than other countries and communities, but we need to start young and this is my promise to you –

I currently dress you in trains and dinosaurs, but if you want to play with dolls and handbags I am completely okay with that. I encourage that. I promise to never say “you run like a girl” or to “man up” however, I might tell you to “stop crying like a baby” because you know if the shoe fits!

I want you to be kind. I want you to be a kind child to everyone. Whether they are a girl or boy. I want you to walk up to anyone on the playground and make friends with them. I want you to see everyone as your equal and to treat people that way.

I want for you to live in a world where we don’t even have to discuss equality because it isn’t a problem anymore and in your world that is going to start with you. You have been raised around some incredible women, all three of your nannies, your sister and obviously me (haha) but the men in your life are fantastic too, your Dad is an equal parent, your brother loves you just as much as your sister and all of your Granddads are amazing, hands on men. Oh and we cannot forget your twin, Uncle Dominic.

I want you to be just like your father – he is a great man. He has attempted to make our home better with his limited DIY skills, while always emptying the dishwasher and being the best ironer I know. In his eyes, the only difference between men and women are our reproductive systems and if he could have carried and birthed you, he absolutely would have.

I want you to be just like your sister, a girl who wears pink but will roll around in the mud like the best of them and just like your brother, a ‘typical boy’ that has the sweetest most gentle heart I know. He once woke up in the night to give you a teddy to stop you from crying.

I want you to be like your nannies, all amazing strong woman who have all had to at different points, wear both parental hats and I want you to be like your granddads, all men who have stepped up and helped support others children.

I want you to live in a world where is just doesn’t matter, where we celebrate individuality but respect equality. I want you to feel comfortable picking up any toy or aspiring to any job role, whether it be a construction worker or a beauty therapist. I want you to not ever have to question “how much of a man” you are, as no matter what you choose, you will be a fantastic person.

I love you,
Mummy xxx
