My Three Top Tips for Money Management

When it comes to money management I’m not perfect… I’ve maxed out credit cards, had to use payday loans uk and have stressed about my finances but I have learnt a huge amount and really wanted to share my three best tips. I am pretty obsessive when it comes to our budget, I track it every single day and update my spreadsheet all the time, but I really do believe that knowledge is power when it comes to tracking your finances. Even if your money isn’t in a good place, it’s 100x better to KNOW than to carry on plodding along with your head in the sand.

Go through your bank and write down ALL of your regular transactions. So obviously you know all your important bills… living costs, food, utilities, get them written out but also have a look at where you seem to spend your money and don’t be in denial. If you have daily transactions in Starbucks but keep thinking you are going to give up your coffee fix it’s probably worth just cutting the crap, accepting latte into your life and setting it aside in your budget!

Plan your year: I like to use a spreadsheet and have the month as the column and the expense as the rows. Mapping out your year means that you can set aside a budget for birthdays, events and Christmas so they don’t creep up on you!

Track your spending daily: When it comes to your money situation, being in the know is vital and even if you know you’re going to have the bad feeling in the pit of your belly, you need to check your bank balance! Knowing what is going on in there, even if it’s bad news, gives you the control over your money!

If you’d like more tips on managing money or examples of the spreadsheets I use, please let me know in the comments!
